I was struggling with a consolidating industry and watching much younger sales people get rewarded for my career efforts.

And I was getting more and more scared by day the that I would be out of a job.

Then Congress deregulated the radio ownership laws in the US which set off a massive wave of consolidation.

I lost one job the first year, then a second job in the second year and then the bottom really fell out from under me in the third year when a friend I had gone to college with had to fire me. 

That meant if I wanted to stay in my industry, I had to go backwards from my climb up the corporate ladder and take a dramatic pay-cut.

I had almost made it to the top and almost had a job where I could call my own shots and I almost made it to the point where after 25 years... I could control career things. "...Almost..."

As you can imagine, I was in pretty bad shape emotionally and frankly I became desperate. But I just wasn't ready to give up on the dream I was chasing of being able to live life on my own terms.

The first thing I tried was calling all my friends 
to let them know I was looking for a job
That didn't work at all.

Next I tried the online job boards, but that just plain sucked.

Then I tried working with a job recruiter, and that worked just a little bit better.

Finally I hooked up with a real executive search firm, with a proven system. And guess what? This time it worked!

And that's when I had my big "ah-ha" moment... I gained real respect for the discovery process the executive search firm used to help me create a vision for the future of my career.

I also realized that the freedoms I wanted, wouldn't come from a job at any level. To live life on my terms, I would need to become a business owner so I could call my own shots. 

I also had a second "ah-ha" moment... when I woke up and realized that I was failing at living life on my own terms because no one in Corporate America had ever said anything to me about being an entrepreneur, starting a business, or taking control of my destiny... God forbid ! They wanted me to build their dream, not mine... !

I hung on desperately to what I was taught in school; get an education, get a good job and retire happy after after 45 years. What? When did THAT stop working? They WANTED to keep me in chains!!  No wonder I was struggling. 

Simply put... this really wasn't my fault! 
What Exactly Do you Mean... This Wasn't My Fault?
The real problem was in the power centers of Corporate America. THEY were the ones keeping me from discovering the secret life of a small business owner! I lived life on Corporate terms... or else! Pink-slip time.

Once I realized that  if I wanted to control my own destiny... then I needed to own a business. 

That was a HUGE moment in my life! I can still remember what it felt like when the light went on for me...

So I got started trying to find the right business really FAST!

I made a list of people to talk to and tracked them down:

- I talked to business brokers about how to investigate owning a business
- I talked to business owners when I could find them 
- I talked to bankers who loaned businesses money
- Then, I ran out of people to talk to...
The Dinner That Changed My Career (and My Life)
Months later.... One night after church, a friend invited me to dinner with a group of people. We ended up sitting next to each other and we talked business. If you believe in coincidences... (I don't anymore) my friend owned 4 franchise companies. 

As we talked business well into dinner my friend said, "we could use someone like you to recruit new business owners, would you have any interest"?  What? A job offer? I must admit, I was flattered and intrigued. It's a long story that I'll be happy to share with you if we end up on a discovery call, but to make it short story... a few days later I accepted his offer and found myself in franchising.

There were systems on top of systems. They had a system for literally everything and I'm not kidding. So after several days I headed down to my friend's office, stuck my head in and said, "Do you have a few minutes"?

    Your intensive consultation is a one-on-one conversation with Terry, that lasts between 1 hour and 2 hours. Expect a friendly question and answer discussion of your preferences for your future business. The goal is to  gather the remaining information necessary for Terry to write a fully customized and personalized franchise strategy. Your consultation requires the completion of your free business builder profile and the completion of a confidential questionnaire.
